Before recommending equipment, identify what you want to operate, how long you expect to camp without shore power and how the RV is currently equipped. Air conditioners, residential refrigerators, inverters, entertainment systems and everyday 12-volt loads require different system designs.

The planning process can include solar-panel capacity, battery storage, charging equipment, inverter capacity, wiring, monitoring and compatibility with the RV’s existing electrical system. A larger component is not automatically the right component; the system should work together as a whole.

Include the RV year, make and model; existing battery type and quantity; current solar or inverter equipment; the appliances you want to run; and typical camping style. Photos of the battery compartment, electrical bay, roof and existing equipment labels are helpful.
