An RV tire can have handsome tread, a clean sidewall and the quiet confidence of something that has not moved since March. None of that proves it is ready for an August run across Arizona.
RV tires live an unusual life. Many spend long stretches parked, carrying substantial weight in the same position. Add intense sunlight, high temperatures and the occasional curb introduced by a campsite spotter saying, “You’ve got miles,” and tire care becomes more than a quick kick before departure.
Arizona’s Department of Transportation advises drivers preparing for extreme heat to check tire pressure, along with the battery, coolant and air conditioning. It also recommends carrying extra water, a charged phone and charger, first-aid supplies and sun protection. A roadside problem that is merely inconvenient in mild weather can become dangerous in triple-digit heat. (ADOT extreme-heat guidance)
Here is a practical tire check to perform while the RV is still parked somewhere safe.
1. Inspect More Than the Tread
Begin with every tire on the RV, tow vehicle and trailer, including inner duals and spares.
Look for:
- Cracks or weather checking
- Cuts, punctures or embedded objects
- Bulges, bubbles or distorted areas
- Exposed cords
- Uneven or unusually rapid wear
- Damage near the bead or wheel
- A valve stem that is cracked, bent or leaking
- Anything rubbing against a tire
Use a flashlight to examine sidewalls that face underneath the RV. If safely accessible, look at both sides of each tire. Never crawl beneath an RV supported only by leveling equipment or an improvised jack.
A bulge, exposed cord, significant cut or unexplained loss of pressure is not a “keep an eye on it” item. Keep the RV parked and have the tire evaluated by a qualified tire professional.
2. Find the Tire’s Birthday
Tread depth tells you how much tread remains. It does not tell you how old the tire is.
The tire’s DOT Tire Identification Number ends with a four-digit date code. The first two digits identify the week of manufacture, and the final two identify the year. A code ending in 2322, for example, means the tire was manufactured during the 23rd week of 2022.
The complete number may appear on only one sidewall, so checking it can require a flashlight, patience and the sort of flexibility normally associated with retrieving a dog toy from beneath the dinette.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that tires become more prone to failure as they age. It notes that some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacement at six to ten years regardless of remaining tread. Sunlight, warm climates, storage conditions and infrequent use can all contribute to aging, with particular concern in southern Sun Belt states. (NHTSA TireWise)
That is a range, not a universal replacement deadline. Follow the RV, chassis and tire manufacturers’ instructions, and ask a qualified professional to evaluate questionable tires. When purchasing a used RV, record the date code from every tire rather than assuming they were all installed together.
Do not forget the spare. It ages even if it has never had the honor of meeting pavement.
3. Check Pressure While the Tires Are Cold
Use an accurate gauge before driving, ideally after the RV has been parked for at least three hours. Check every tire, including inner duals and the spare.
Start with the pressure information supplied by the RV or vehicle manufacturer: the certification label, tire-and-loading label and applicable owner’s manuals. Do not use the pressure molded into a tire’s sidewall as an automatic inflation target; that marking is not a substitute for the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure at least monthly and explains that a tire-pressure monitoring system is not a replacement for manual inspection. A warning may not appear until a tire is already significantly underinflated. (NHTSA TireWise)
For motorhomes and other RVs whose manufacturers provide load-based inflation procedures, accurate wheel-position or axle weights and the tire maker’s load-and-inflation tables may also be part of determining the proper pressure. Follow the instructions for your specific RV and tires. If the placard, manual and tire information seem to disagree, do not guess—consult the RV manufacturer, tire manufacturer or a qualified RV tire professional.
A few related rules are worth remembering:
- Never exceed a tire, wheel or valve component’s rated limits.
- Tires sharing an axle must be handled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- A tire that repeatedly loses air needs diagnosis, not a recurring appointment with the compressor.
- Do not bleed pressure from a hot tire merely because its reading rose while driving.
4. Look at the Wear Pattern
NHTSA identifies 2/32 inch as the point at which a tire is worn out, but an RV tire may need professional attention well before that if it has damage, irregular wear or age-related concerns. (NHTSA TireWise)
Uneven wear can point toward several possible problems, including inflation, alignment, suspension or loading issues. The pattern alone does not provide a reliable driveway diagnosis.
If one shoulder is disappearing, the center looks unusually worn, the tread is scalloped or paired tires appear mismatched, schedule an inspection. Correcting the underlying problem matters just as much as replacing damaged rubber.
5. Make Sure the RV Is Not Overloaded
A properly inflated tire can still be overloaded.
Locate the RV’s weight ratings and understand the limits that apply to the vehicle, axles, tires and—when towing—the hitch and tow vehicle. Compare those limits with actual scale weights from a suitable public scale. For the best picture, follow your RV manufacturer’s guidance on obtaining axle or individual wheel-position weights.
Remember that water, fuel, passengers, tools, food, pets and “just one more folding chair” all count. Storage compartments are persuasive little spaces, but they are not exemptions from physics.
Do not try to correct an overloaded RV simply by adding more air. Reduce or redistribute weight only as permitted by the manufacturer, and seek professional help if you are unsure how the load should be carried.
6. Check the Equipment Around the Tires
Tire safety does not stop at the rubber. Before departure, examine accessible components around the wheel area for obvious trouble:
- Loose or missing valve caps
- Damaged valve extensions
- Signs of fluid contamination
- Debris lodged between dual tires
- Missing or visibly loose wheel hardware
- Contact between a tire and bodywork, wiring or plumbing
- A spare-tire carrier that is corroded or difficult to operate
Wheel installation and torque procedures are safety-critical. Use the RV or chassis manufacturer’s specifications and tools, or have the work performed by a qualified technician. Guessing with a long wrench is not a torque specification.
7. Treat Tire Covers as Helpers, Not Force Fields
Opaque, properly fitted tire covers can reduce direct sunlight while an RV is stored. Keeping tires clean and maintaining the RV according to its manufacturers’ storage instructions can also help.
Covers do not stop aging, repair existing damage or make an overloaded tire safe. Avoid unsupported home remedies and petroleum-based dressings unless the tire manufacturer specifically approves them.
For long-term storage, follow the RV and tire manufacturers’ instructions concerning surface, movement, pressure and support. Never use leveling jacks or blocks in a way their manufacturers prohibit.
8. Prepare for the Roadside Problem You Hope Not to Have
In Arizona heat, the safest tire-change strategy may be calling for professional roadside assistance and waiting somewhere protected from traffic and extreme temperatures.
Before leaving, carry:
- More drinking water than the drive should ordinarily require
- A charged phone and backup power source
- Roadside-assistance and insurance information
- Reflective warning equipment
- A first-aid kit
- Sun protection
- Necessary medications
- A flashlight with working batteries
- Tire information and RV manuals
If a tire fails, move away from traffic if the vehicle can be moved safely. Do not attempt a roadside repair in an exposed or unstable location. Large RV wheels, dual assemblies and heavy trailers can make tire changes especially hazardous.
The Five-Minute Departure Check
- Walk completely around the RV and tow vehicle.
- Look for low, damaged or distorted tires.
- Check cold pressure with a reliable gauge.
- Confirm that valve caps and accessible extensions are secure.
- Inspect the spare.
- Look underneath for leaks, hanging parts or tire obstructions.
- Confirm that cargo has not pushed the RV beyond its ratings.
- Make sure your water, phone and emergency supplies are aboard.
Five minutes cannot replace scheduled maintenance or a professional inspection. It can, however, reveal a surprising number of reasons not to merge onto US 60 just yet.
Give the Tires the Attention the Floor Plan Gets
We naturally notice an RV’s kitchen, storage and comfortable chair. Tires are less charming, but they carry every one of those things.
Record the date codes, check cold pressure, understand the RV’s actual weight and take damage or repeated pressure loss seriously. If anything looks questionable, deal with it before the trip—not beside the highway at two in the afternoon.
